ATHLETE IN PROFILE

NAME:  Susan Olshanski    

JOB:  Actuary

FAVORITE MUSIC TYPE / GROUP:   Mostly rock and 80s(pop and alt), so 60s, 70s, and 80s.

CHILDREN / PETS ?:  Two kids George (15) and Gordon (13) both lift George does crossfit depending on school sports.  Chickens although those are really David's.  I help with the eggs.

FAVORITE VACATION SPOT:  Anything that isn't a beach, like Colorado.

HOBBIES: Playing bridge, reading, complicated board games, Kenken

HOW LONG HAVE YOU DONE CROSSFIT AND WHAT MADE YOU TRY IT OUT ?

I have done crossfit since August of 2014 all at TopGun.  I had been trying to design a varied dumbbell program for myself but I hated having to change it once I made one and didn't want to keep doing the same thing. Then I saw someone from high school posting stuff about crossfit and was like that is what I have to do.  So I found TG.

WHAT WERE YOUR THOUGHTS ABOUT CROSSFIT AT FIRST?

I really had no thoughts except it was what I had been trying to design for myself except so much better.  However, once I was done with the intro I was really scared to go to my first few regular classes.

DESCRIBE YOUR FAVORITE THINGS ABOUT CROSSFIT AND HOW IT HAS IMPACTED YOUR LIFE:

I love how I feel when I have finished an intense workout.  I also love how the strength in myself I feel on a daily basis.  It has given me a much better perspective on body issues.  

FAVORITE WORKOUT:  The Bear, Bring Sally Up, basically anything with heavy weights and less cardio.

FAVORITE MOVEMENT:  Overhead Squats

JOB: Litigation Technology Specialist – managing litigation documents and courtroom presentation

FAVORITE MUSIC TYPE / GROUP: Queer anthems, punk, ska, opera, trance

CHILDREN / PETS ?: 2 children, George and Gordon. 4 hens.

FAVORITE VACATION SPOT: Zion National Park

HOBBIES: Dungeons and Dragons, Euro-Boardgames, Video games, kayaking, mountain climbing, camping, hiking, bicycling.

HOW LONG HAVE YOU DONE CROSSFIT AND WHAT MADE YOU TRY IT OUT ? I’ve been doing crossfit for 3 years. I graduated boot camp at Top Gun.  Susan had been doing it longer and every day she’d tell me about all the stuff she did, eventually I thought it would be easier to just go to crossfit.

WHAT WERE YOUR THOUGHTS ABOUT CROSSFIT AT FIRST? I enjoyed learning and experiencing so many new skills—toes to bar, handstand push-ups, kettlebell swings, Turkish get-ups, weightlifting, rowing, wall-balls… I had never done any of those things before in my life… and I love learning new things.

DESCRIBE YOUR FAVORITE THINGS ABOUT CROSSFIT AND HOW IT HAS IMPACTED YOUR LIFE: I have very little willpower to make myself exercise – but with Crossfit I have a coach telling me what to do, and other athletes around me doing the same workout which would make it too embarrassing to give-up. I have a slightly competitive streak so I like to try to keep up with a younger or faster athlete.  So with Crossfit, I was able to find interesting workouts and I am able to maintain a workout regimen without getting bored.  I was ready to decline into decreptitude, accepting that I’d never be able to physically do things I could do in my 30s, but now I’ve become stronger and healthier than at any previous time in my life… recovery takes longer at 50 than it did at 20, but my 50 year old self could beat my 20 year old self at any physical challenge.

FAVORITE WORKOUT: Running Annie or Filthy Fifty

FAVORITE MOVEMENT: Weighted Lunges
